I am
currently interning at P.S. 84 Steinway School located Astoria, NY. Three
days a week I work in an amazing kindergarten
class filled with
children who are so passionate about learning. You
wouldn’t really think that kindergartners could
be passionate about
anything other than Dora the Explorer, but these children are excited
from 8am
until the closing bell tolls.
During
the
day I assist my mentor teacher with various
lessons such as phonetics, math and letter writing. Currently the
children are learning the
letter ‘p’ with the help of ‘letter people’. Letter
people are cartoon characters printed on
simple white paper with
a letter in the middle of their shirts. The
children color them, usually with a color that
begins with the same
letter they are learning, and then write three words on the back of
their
letter people that begin with the letter they are learning. The
children then cut out their letter people
and attach large popsicle sticks to the back. At
the end of the month, the children have three or
four letter people
to take home and are excited about showing their parents the work
they’ve
done. The children also have class
periods located in other rooms which consist of science, gym,
computers, library
time and music. There the children expand
their knowledge and understanding of the different subjects.
During
the
course of the day I assist my mentor teacher with
all aspects of classroom activities. Identifying
letters and writing them out, counting
and identifying
numbers and even the simplest of things like puzzles and hand
washing.
I have also attended the various subjects
located outside the classroom and assist those teachers as well.
