P.S. 84 Steinway, located at
22-45 41st Street in Astoria, Queens is a small, ethnically diverse
school that has a strong commitment to the visual arts and music.
With grades PK- 7, students are able to develop academically and
emotionally in an environment designed specifically for their
individually needs. With 43% of the student population being
white, 38% being hispanic, 17% being asian, and 2% being black,
students and faculty benefit from all of the culturally diverse
classrooms located within P.S. 84 Steinway's walls.
I have completed two internship's at P.S. 84
Steinway at this
time. In the Fall of 2008, I was placed in a kindergarten class
where I was able to observe my mentor teacher as she put in place the
foundations of reading and writing while keeping the students engaged
and active throughout the day.
In the Spring of 2009 I was placed in a fourth
grade class where I was
pleasantly surprised to observe the young adult's that were the make-up
of this classroom. I was able to take part in various activities
including book clubs, poetry writing, famous artist studies, music
classes, modern dance classes, and much more.
As my time at P.S. 84 Steinway comes to an end
and I prepare myself for
the four-year college and student teaching, I have taken the time to
reflect upon all the knowledge that I have gained from my
observations. Not only have I benefited from the immersion into
the elementary school system, but I have developed an even greater love
and respect for the teaching profession. More than ever, I am
confident that I am making the right decision by becoming an elementary
school teacher.
