Now,
you know me a little bit by reading the Welcome page of my ePortfolio.
Let me tell you more about myself. I am outgoing and family orientated.
My family members include my parents, one older brother, and two
younger brothers. I love them so much, especially my mother. Although
the fact that we are living in different states, we call each other
almost every day. I go to visit them during Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Or they come to New York City to see me.
I grew up in the energetic city of Hong Kong where I lived until 2003
and, thereafter, I emigrated to the United States. I worked
for a global French financial institute, BNP Parisbas, when
I was in Hong Kong. As an assistant manager in the securities
operations department, I was responsible for local and foreign
stocks, mutual funds, bonds and US treasury settlements. I
was exhausted by the heavy workload during
my banking years, which finally
prompted me to resign and I decided to move to a new environment.
I like facing challenges in life. Therefore, in 2003, I landed
in the most developed country in the world, the United States,
to start a new life. Owing to my proactive and adaptive personality,
I was able to assimilate into American lifestyles within a
few months of my arrival.
Due to my passion for
travel, I chose travel and tourism as my major. I enjoy my college life
very much. I would say that going back to school was one of the best
decisions in my life since I know I can understand the American society
and culture more from school. Besides, the college’s students are from
diverse cultures; I made lots of friends from different countries at
school; it increases my social network. I love LaGuardia Community
College. Its program content caters to my needs. For example, take the
Fundamentals of Professional Advancement course, it helps me to
evaluate my future career and educational plans. The most memorable
learning experience in this course is the job shadowing at
British Airways.
Job shadowing refers to a student spending a day or longer accompanying
someone in his or her workplace to observe and learn what a particular
job or occupation consists of. The student observes what the employee
does for a living and has the chance to ask questions about the talents
and skills required and the level of education needed for the job.
Job shadowing provided me
with a clearer picture of British Airways. The airline industry is an
integral part of the travel industry. Through the process, I understand
more about the operations of airline companies. Moreover, I was glad
that I had a mock interview at British Airways. It helped me to prepare
for real interviews in the future.
I am satisfied with my
performance at school. But I know I can do more and better than what I
have accomplished at the moment. Looking back on my first semester in
the college, the language problem gave me a hard time. I understand if
I want to succeed in the college, I have to overcome this problem. In
this respect, I spend more time in reading, writing, and speaking with
others. Now, I can tell my English has improved a lot; but there is
still room to improve. I have my way of studying: taking notes and
recording what professors say in the classes. Notes are vital to me,
and with the assistance of a recorder, it makes me study more
effectively. Doing research papers
and
having presentations are the big challenges to me at school. But these
are a college requirement that every college student has to face.
Therefore, I make my best effort to finish all projects.
I would like to start my
career in the marketing or management field of the travel and tourism
industry or an airline company. However, only obtaining an associate’s
degree is not enough to position myself. I believe that a bachelor’s
degree is a bare minimum. Therefore, after graduation from LaGuardia
Community College, I want to transfer to New York University to get a
bachelor’s degree. I feel I am on the right track toward my goal.
That is my brief
introduction of myself. Thank you for spending your time to visit my
ePortfolio. You are so welcome to send me emails to talk about travel,
sports (especially soccer and tennis), music and movies.
