The nursing field
is a vast one; to
pick a definite career path would almost be hard. Going
through the registered nursing program
in LaGuardia
Community College,
I was fortunate to
have professors that not only taught the curriculum, but they taught
with
passion and care for their students.
Also, the different observational rotations that were
mandatory in each
section helped me in creating an outline for my short term and long
term
professional goals.
My
short term goals include continuing my education; I hope to enter a
Bachelor’s
degree program by Spring 2010 in
New York University. After which I would like to find a position
as a staff nurse on the Medical Surgical floor of a magnate hospital. After working on a Medical Surgical floor for
2 years; I would then like to work in the operating room as a scrub
nurse. During my operating room rotation
in Medical
Surgical 1; I quickly found that was very interested in working in the
OR.
As
I work, I plan to continue academically towards my Master’s Degree in
Nursing
Education. This is because as I student
I found that I was able to understand what I was studying more when I
“teach”
other students. Also, there have been
professors that I’ve met that have been so supportive of me and who
truly care
about me as a student, I would also like to be able to someone like
that for a
student one day. My long term goal is to
obtain my Master’s Degree in Nursing Education and become a nurse
educator;
possibly at LaGuardia
Community College.
There’s
a famous quote that I read once, “life gets in the way as you are
making
plans”, meaning as much as we plan for our future, there will surely
will be
bumps in the road. With the economy as
bad as it is, it would also be prudent for me to try to obtain a job as
soon as
possible after I obtain my BSN (Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing) since I
have
heard it increasingly hard for newly graduated Associate Degree nurses
to find
a job. The short and long term goals I
have made for myself are in a rough outline, with the exception of when
I plan
to re-enter school again in Spring 2010; I have tried to keep my long
term goal
realistic but not concrete in time frame until my short term goals has
been
achieved.
