About Me
My name is Cherry Sudartono. I'm 21 years old and born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. My ethnicity is Chinese. Recently my sister brought to my attention something pretty interesting, when I turn 24, if I continue my study in USA, half of my life is going to be spent out of Indonesia. The reason for this "blank" period is because when I was 12, I went away with my sister to Malaysia, where I stayed for 6 years for my Junior High and High School. I spoke Indonesian, however I was brought up speaking Chinese Mandarin with my parents (in Malaysia, I also learned how to read and write in the language). That leaves me a fluent speaker of three languages, i.e. Indonesian, Chinese Mandarin (also includes some other Chinese dialects) and English.
For some unknown reason, I have wanted to come to the United States since I was a little girl. That is why when the time came for me to make a decision to pursue my college degree, I have to come here. As to, why New York and why LaGuardia Community College, it is because I believe that I will learn much much more by coming to this multi-cultural city (The diversity of the students in LaGuardia is also a big reason why I chose this college). And I do learn a lot. I learned how to respect people that come from different cultures, I make amazing friends from a whole bunch of different nationalities which I am pretty sure I would not have done if I were to stay in Indonesia. I am grateful for being blessed with the opportunity to open my eyes to a whole new world.
I have always been interested in Science and also Mathematics, which is why my major is Liberal Arts: Math and Science. Since I am graduating from LaGuardia December this year, I am planning to transfer to either Baruch College to study Actuarial Science or to Hunter College to study Food Technology. Overall, I think I’ve done a good job in my time in LaGuardia. My grades in my classes have never been lower than a B. I think this is because I try to be an active participant in my classes. I believe that I deserve an average of A- for my performances in classroom. I used to be a shy person, I don’t have a lot of opinions, or I’m scared to voice them out because I’m used to a passive type of education back in Asia. Therefore, the most challenging part for me in school was to open up and participate more in classes. However, I overcame the fear of speaking up and I think I have become a better student ever since I did.
I think as I grow up, I learn more lesssons about life. I learn that I can't make everybody like me, but regardless, I have to try to leave good impressions on other people so that I can still be friends. Above all that I also learn that, I can't have others’ respect, if I don't respect myself. Also, is critical to make onself happy instead of trying to please others and forgetting about yourself. I think these are all powerfull lessons that I am nothing but glad to share it with everybody else.
My favorite part of the ePortfolio program is the fact that we all get a chance to show ourselves in a more artistic way than just a resume. In fact, all of us get a chance to be proud of what we’ve done in school. Some of the skills that I think is useful for all LaGuardians to learn are to listen to the professors and take good notes. Besides that, it is also helpful to be able to ask questions.
At this moment currently, I am not sure what I want to be, all I know is that I want to do something that includes interacting with people, while being able to utilize my academic skills. However, I still am going to transfer to a four-year college and then hopefully I would know more about my dream career.
