"Life is a series
of collisions
with the future; it is not
the sum of what we
have
been, but what we yearn
to be."

My name is
Marie
Jimenez. I was born in Coney
Island, Brooklyn, in
1982. In 1986, my family and I moved to Queens. My parents
are from the
provinces of the Philippines. In terms of language, Tagalog is
the national language of the Philippines. Although there are
several dialects spoken in the Philippines, Ilocano is a dialect that
both my parents speak at home and to my relatives. Unfortunately,
I am unable to speak in both languages however, I understand both
languages, particularly Ilocano.
In high school,
I was part of the Medical
Technology program where my interest in the healthcare field
started. Being part of the Medical Technology program enabled me
to apply what I learned by working in the hospital, and enabled me to
compete in the Healh Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition
held in Syracuse, NY. In 2000, I graduated with honors and
decided that I wanted to further my education by attending
college.
While
attending Hunter, I
majored in psychology and minored in sociology. Originally, I
started out
as a pre-med student, but gradually found myself more interested in the
patient
care aspect rather than medicine. However, I wanted to
complete my
liberal arts courses and majored in psychology because I
gravitated to it
the most out of all the subjects that I
took. My
favorite class that I took was medical sociology. I found that
particular
class most interesting because I learned about the sociological aspects
of the healthcare field, especially in nursing. It greatly
interests me |
