Assignments:

1)
A Feeling of Being Home

"In your first essay, I would like you to write an essay that connects personal events in your life with public events in your lifetime.  Your essay will be based on a photograph or photographs from your personal collection that place you, family, or and/or friends in an environment that has particular significance for you. The essay will include a description of the photograph and a narrative that  conveys the meaning of that place for you."

I chose the photograph with my parents in our apartment in my hometown. This assignment was very tough for me in terms of emotions. I had to write about a significant place and two the most important people in my life whom I have not seen for a while. After the first draft of the essay was completed, we had to read it to each other in groups in the class. I remember my voice trembling and my hands shaking when it was my turn to read my version. As I was going through the story, the memories became so bright and overwhelming that I could hardly hold the tears. When the professor gave me back the first graded version of this essay, she asked me to revise the conclusion. As I was working on it, I had a chance to look back at my childhood and early adulthood and to rethink my values. I have realized that no matter where I am located, my heart and my sole were, are and always will be with my parents in our small cozy apartment in Lipetsk, Russia, the only place in the entire world that I can call home.

2) The Truth about Drinking Water in New York City

"Your research paper will focus on one New York City environmental problem that you will identify and take steps to solve.  Your completed Modern Language Association style paper will be approximately 1000 words.  The ingredients of a passing research essay:   A paper that is at least 800 words.  (Your final version should be about 1000 words.) Please include a Word Count on your paper;  A clear response to the assignment.  You need to identify a New York City environmental problem and suggest solution(s); Documentation—you should include at least five direct quotations from five different sources;  Complete Works Cited List.  The assignment calls for 6 sources:  1) Your interview essay; 2) At least three articles that you located through the LaGuardia Library Website (look for sources in Lexis Nexis and Ebsco Host); 3) two additional sources. These may include films and web sites."

I picked the topic about NYC drinking water because, for me, it seems strange and suspicious that one of the most populated cities in the world being exposed to enormous congestion, has “champagne” drinking water. During the research process it turned to be that my suspects were not unreasonable and NYC has serious issues going on with its drinking water supply. I found out that, despite of frequent and continuous incidents of water contamination, the city officials keep on persuading the residents of safety of the water they are drinking risking the health of thousand of New Yorkers. The facts that I came across while conducting this projects show that the weak government enforcement of rules and regulations, businesses’ indifference to environmental issues, and the crisis of global warming are the main factor that put NYC drinking water under threat. I think that the idea of selecting an environmental problem for the research project is great. After I completed this assignment I rethought the way I use drinking water and became more attentive to environment in whole.
