When I was introduced to the ePortfolio for the
first
time in
the “Freshmen seminar”, I knew right away that it was a great idea. I
have
always wanted to create a web site where I can present myself in a
professional
way. I am thankful to LaGuardia that this college gave us this unique
opportunity to create our ePortfolio.
As Netscape, the program for
ePortfolio development, was
new to me, I had to overcome some technical difficulties; however, the
program is
very user-friendly and I got used to it quite quickly.
What I liked the most while working on ePortfolio is
that
not only the ePortfolio instructors but other professors were willing
to
provide their assistance. For example, in CEP121 “Professional
Advancement”
class we had to complete three versions of “About Me” essay in order to
make it
sound right. Moreover, we were working on our resumes for a several
weeks to
make it polished. With the help of the professors, I realized that
ePortfolio
is not just a site where you save your work, but it is a powerful tool
that can
help in educational process and future career. Therefore, every single
detail
has to make sense and be related to my professional life in some way.
The most challenging for me in
the process of creating my
ePortfolio was to design a “Welcome” page. A “Welcome” page is the
first
impression that a visitor gets from the site, and it is extremely
important to
make sure that this impression is positive.A “Welcome” page has
to be
inviting and
attract visitor's attention. Therefore, I was trying to find a way to
make my “Welcome’
page unique and unusual, and I even had couple of specific ideas
regarding it. Unfortunately,
a limited period of time and my technical skills were not enough to
realize my
ideas because I had to master a totally new and sophisticated software
application. Nevertheless, I am not going to give up my plan, and, as
soon as I
have some extra free time, I will find a way to transform my “Welcome”
page into
a piece of art.
As I was choosing the assignments to
upload to the “Classes
and Projects” page, I realized that I had done a significant amount of
work and I was proud of every single assignment that I had completed. Moreover,
I reread each of them and noticed that my writing skills had improved
dramatically
during my two semesters at LaGuardia. In addition, as I put all the
assignment
together, I
discovered that all my classes were actually related to each other
because there was a noticeable connection between the topics of the
assignments. Some of them were even identical. For example, we had to
write a
resume and a cover letter for two classes, and the research project for
the “English
Composition” class was a base for my business presentation in my speech
class.
In general,
creating the ePortfolio was a pleasant and useful
experience for me. It helped me to understand myself better and be more
specific
about my educational and career goals. As I continue my education, I
will definitely
keep on improving my ePortfolio. I hope that one day I will be able to
show it
to my friends, family and of course my potential employers.
