In winter 2008, I visited New York City instead of going
back to my hometown in China to research my future career and
educational plan. I was an Education major in Saginaw Valley State
University (MI)-my first school in the United States, however I didn’t
want to be a teacher. Because I was interested in many fields, it was
extremely hard for me to choose a major, many of my friends suggest me
to
study in business because I have language advantage in that I can speak
fluent both Chinese and Korean. Also, I am good at math. When I
visited NYC the largest economic center in the world, I was influenced
by the economical atmosphere here, so I chose my major in Accounting
and I transferred to LaGuardia Community College, of City University of
New York because I think it is easier to get the economic concept in a
big city than in Saginaw town (MI). However, while I was taking
Business Law-one of the requirements in Accounting major, I got
interested in Law. I like to argue and seek for what is right and I
decided, I
want to be a lawyer. I interviewed my professor from Business Law
class-Michael Napolitano, Esq. He gave me some good suggestions on
how to become a lawyer and what I can do with my education in CUNY. I
got information from Professor Napolitano that LaGuardia has
connections with Columbia University and that John Jay College of
Criminal
Justice is also a good school for law students. Many law school
students are not law majors in their four-year colleges but are
involved in a lot of logical thinking and reading writing. My
professor suggest me to major in English to get good reading and
writing skills, but in my opinion, since I want to be a lawyer, I want
to know some of the American law system before I go into Law School, so
I
chose paralegal as my major. I know it is hard for a female to be a
lawyer, and also know it will be harder for a foreign female to be a
lawyer in the United States, but I am not afraid about any challenges
in
the future. Now, I have strong ambition to be a good lawyer.
